Symphonetta is a full symphonic ensemble designed especially for the middle school student as an introduction to the orchestra experience.

Students sign up through the NOYO office for an audition with the conductor which includes performance of scales, orchestra material and a solo of their choice. Auditions typically take place in May, but may be scheduled any time in the year.

Repertoire includes new music written specifically for this type of group and adaptations of full symphonic music. The musical goals of the group are to develop awareness of the blending of instruments, balancing of musical voices, interpretations of composer's intentions and overall expressive playing. Socially, students find a group that is welcoming of anyone who is serious about their music-making. There are at least three formal concerts in the season with the first one in late fall, the second one in mid-winter, and the final one in early spring. Typically the season is concluded by the Easter break for schools.
