OBERLIN, OH — The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras will present World Harmonies Sunday, January 17th at 3:30PM at Warner Concert Hall, Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Conductors Peggie Willett and Michael Roest will lead 110 gifted young musicians through a program of music from around the world, exploring the harmonies of Japan, central and south Africa, Jordan, Russia, France, Spain, and Argentina. The Symphonetta Strings will open the concert under Peggie Willett’s direction with a performance of Ear-igami by Richard Meyer, a piece featuring extended string performance techniques using origami paper. Under the direction of Assistant Conductor and Oberlin Conservatory student Annika Sundberg, the Symphonetta Strings will then perform Rhythms of Africa by Soon Hee Newbold. The first half of the program will come to a close with Ahlan Sabaya Alfarah by Kenneth Sarch and Balalaika! by James Meredith. Michael Roest will conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra and lead the audience on a trip through Paris with a performance of George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Then, off to Spain with selections from Georges Bizet’s well-known opera Carmen led by Assistant Conductor and Oberlin Conservatory student Maurice Cohn. The concert will come to an exciting finish in Argentina with a selection of tangos by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla.
The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras has provided outstanding orchestral training to the youth of Northern Ohio since 1969.
