Three talented soloists to perform during NOYO’s upcoming Winter Concerts
LORAIN COUNTY, OH—The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra is pleased to announce that its Winter Concerts will take place Sunday, Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Warner Concert Hall at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. After the concert, NOYO will celebrate its 50th anniversary season with an Alumni Reunion and Music Teacher Soirée.
The concerts, titled “Music from the Heart,” will feature the talented winners of NOYO’s annual concerto competition: violinist Yikun Zhou, an eighth grade student at Lee Burneson Middle School of Westlake School District; horn player Emily Lay, a high school senior at Wooster High School of Wooster City Schools; and Aleksander Swänger of Ashland County West Holmes Career Center.
The first concert begins at 1:30 p.m. and features the Amati Strings (conducted by Katie Holaway), the Wind Symphony (conducted Andrew Machamer), and the Sinfonietta Strings (led by Peggie Willett). To close the concert, the three ensembles will combine to perform “Shenandoah,” arranged by Jack Bullock, as a 127-member-strong ensemble.
“Bringing together our youngest students to perform as a symphonic orchestra with strings, winds, brass, and percussion gives them a special experience that they can only get at NOYO,” said Machamer. “It’s incredible to see that many young musicians work together to perform beautiful music.”
The second concert begins at 4 p.m. and features NOYO’s advanced Philharmonia Orchestra (conducted by David Pope). The program includes Vaughan Williams’ Prelude ‘49th Parallel,’ the “March to the Scaffold” from Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Mozart’s Concerto No. 4 for Horn in Eb Major with soloist Emily Lay, and Saint-Saens’ Allegro Appassionato for Cello with soloist Aleksander Swänger.
After the concert, there will be an Alumni Reunion and Music Teacher Soirée at 5:30 p.m. at The Feve (30 S. Main St., Oberlin, OH, 44074). Alumni and music teachers will receive a free drink, and appetizers will be served. For more information visit our Facebook page or website.
