auditions

NOYO auditions are friendly, relaxed meetings where you can get to know our artistic staff and learn what we have to offer you.

Auditions for the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra's 2019-2020 season will be held in Oberlin on Saturday, May 11; Sunday, June 9; Saturday, July 20; and Sunday, August 18th between 10am and 4pm. Auditions are held at First United Methodist Church (45 S. Professor St., Oberlin, OH 44074). Musicians eligible for participation in our ensembles must be between the ages of 8 and 22 and be prepared for a serious commitment to challenging repertoire and to the full rehearsal and concert schedule. Please complete this form to register for an audition.

Noyo philharmonia orchestra

Audition Requirements

Philharmonia Orchestra

NOYO accepts Philharmonia auditions for the following instruments:

  • Strings (violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp)
  • Woodwinds (flute/piccolo, oboe/english horn, clarinet, bassoon)
  • Brass (french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba)
  • Percussion (timpani, drums, mallet, and auxiliary percussion)
  • Keyboard (piano and celesta)

Each unaccompanied audition lasts approximately 8 minutes. Students must prepare two contrasting pieces (loud vs. soft, fast vs. slow) and a major scale of the Music Director’s choice in 2-3 octaves. Violinists unable to play scales in 3 octaves will not be considered for the first violin section but will certainly be considered for the second violin section.

Acceptable pieces include:

  • Movements from concertos or other solo works, including Solo & Ensemble contest pieces
  • Sonatas
  • Etudes
  • Partitas
  • Orchestral excerpts
  • Excerpts from band or orchestra pieces prepared for school concerts

Percussionists should select works to be performed on two different percussion instruments. All percussionists are required to bring their own mallets.

Noyo amati strings

Amati Strings and Sinfonietta Strings

NOYO accepts Sinfonietta and Amati Strings auditions for the following instruments:

  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • Bass
  • Harp

Amati Strings:

Each unaccompanied audition lasts approximately 8 minutes. Students must prepare C, G, and D major scales (player's choice of 1 or 2 octaves) and a solo of the player's choice, comparable to Suzuki books 1-3. Sight reading will be requested at the audition.

Sinfonietta Strings:

Each unaccompanied audition lasts approximately 8 minutes. Students must prepare C, G, D, A, and F major scales (player's choice of 1-3 octaves) and a solo of the player's choice, comparable to Suzuki books 2-4. Sight reading will be requested at the audition.

Noyo wind symphony

Wind Symphony

NOYO accepts Wind Symphony auditions for the following instruments:

  • Woodwinds (flute/piccolo, oboe/english horn, clarinet, saxophones, bassoon)
  • Brass (french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba)
  • Percussion

Each unaccompanied audition lasts approximately 8 minutes. Students must prepare a piece or two of music that will demonstrate the student's playing ability (school ensemble music is permissible) and a major scale of the conductor's choice (B-flat, F, C, G, or D) in 1-2 octaves.

Lab Group

Instrumentalists of all kinds are welcome to join Lab Group, and no audition is necessary (although an interview with the ensemble director is recommended).
